Chicago’s Willis Tower, which is undergoing a $546 million renovation, is the new headquarters for the engineering firm ESD Global, which is leasing 46,884 square feet in the landmark skyscraper, and now occupies the building’s entire 53rd floor and half of the 54th floor.
Re-engineering a 21st century commercial office, especially one in a circa 1970s, super-tall building like the Willis Tower, is a formidable challenge. ESD’s Willis Tower headquarters is the first office to benefit from the firm’s new cloud-based intelligent building platform. Focused on enhancing the occupant experience while improving system performance, ESD’s IB platform tracks energy data gathered in real time, bringing systems controls together to meet energy performance goals. On the front end, ESD’s 250 employees will be able to access the office, control the utilities in their workspace, book building amenities, and more — all from their computers or mobile phone apps.
DW Hammer has a long, successful relationship with ESD and provided the essential construction services that ESD required to complete the project.
“DW Hammer is proud to work with ESD; a global leader in Improving Society Through the Built Environment. Our long-term business relationship has provided creative and innovative solutions to some of the biggest names in business and technology. We are grateful to our friends at ESD for the opportunity to partner with them in the completion of their new global headquarters” – Dave Langhamer, Founding Principal, DW Hammer
ESD’s cloud-based intelligent building platform provides a unique approach to smart system integration — it integrates lighting systems, electrical distribution, HVAC equipment, and more with sensors installed wherever possible, at each desk, in most light fixtures, in order to gather granular data. This data will help ESD develop and pilot new software features and sequences of operation to enhance employee, equipment, and space productivity.
“We wanted a space that demonstrates our strong commitment to our employees and shows our clients what is possible for their offices. DWH proactively assisted to evaluate cost effective options and keep us on schedule. The team’s vast experience streamlined our decision-making process. The result: our new office is well-received by both our employees and clients.” – Raj Gupta, Executive Chairman, Environmental Systems Design
